Amateur Radio
I have been actively involved in amateur radio since I was fourteen years old. However the seed was sown during my time as a boy scouts in the 41st Oxford I Clearly remember that during one summer camp that was held at Faller we were Encouraged to make a crystal set a group of us put up a long wire antenna Suspended in some trees. I guess like many before me and since the joy of hearing stations form far away places was truly wonder full with each turn of the dial suddenly I was hearing music from some far away exotic place. Of course forty years ago the world felt a much larger place than today. Long distance travel then was not within the reach of the many. Forty years on mass communication coupled with affordable world wide travel has had the effect of shrinking the world.
My interested in radio continued to grow under Douglas Woodford G8IB who ran our school amateur radio club the station was made up of a very long wire antenna. Home made atu home made valve 20m cw transmitter. The receiver was a Marconi CR100. During this time I joined The Radio society of
My own receiving station was a long wire antenna home made atu and the receiver was An HRO. I was able to supplement my pocket money by repairing radios. For friends And family and this helped to off set some of the cost in setting up my own receiving station which by today’s standard seems very modest.
After leaving school I worked for a radio and television company as a television improver in short at first I spent my working day repairing radio’s then after six months I was moved into the television repair shop and I soon picked up the hang of repairing colour television sets during this time I attended the local technical college in oxford one full day a week and one evening a week. A year later I left and worked as a wireless engineer with the government. I changed the C&G course to Telecoms completing my studies three year later. I am currently employed in the
